about

A pure shot of pop-punk adrenaline, Pissbrick’s “Disapproval EP” gnarls its teeth with a youthful glee. Volume is a given for these songs virtually burst at the seams. Everything about it has a stripped-down, raw presence about it. Best of all is the guitar work that serves as the very core of the album. There is a sense of balance despite the chaos, for the songs have a habit-forming, addictive rhythm to them one that seems to draw the listener into the unique world. On a more personal note, the go for broke attitude extends into Pissbrick’s ability to transcend the typical way of living for something much rawer and rebellious.

Sonically drawn from the aughts-era of pop-punk, specifically of Hit The Deck and Story So Far. There is a similar emotional connection to the overall tenor of the pieces, and none of them overstay their welcome. Kept short and nimble the tracks pack a considerable punch full of the defiance and vinegar that makes great punk rock. Going further back into the roots of punk, Pissbrick’s bright brilliants bursts of energy recall a bit of Los Angeles’ own punk tradition, in particular the chaotic carefree spirit of the Germs.

No warm up, nothing, “Lost Art Of Thinking” simply opens the collection in a beautiful blur, as the drums mixed with the infectious riff set up the propulsive sound. Tempos are brought to their absolute breaking point on the live intimate quality of “Cognizant” as the group pours their whole soul into the sound. Driving propulsive swings through on the wild-eyed “Silt”. Guitar work goes for the pure unhinged with “Less Than Human”. By far the highlight comes through with “Hit The Deck” whose communal presence and racing pulse feels outright cathartic to experience. Full of passion, this piece touches upon the best of punk’s youthful soul. Limber bass work underpins the hyperactivity of “Forfeit” for the song’s shouted vocals feels quite physical, nicely bringing up imagery of an incredible live show. Ending things on a relatively reflective note is the rebellion of “Dismissal” where the shouted vocals have a commanding grace to them.

“Disapproval EP” shows off Pissbrick’s intense energy and clear-eyed, sharp focus.
